Before there was Big Belly Baez, before 3 Penis Productions was founded, before the explosive Post-Pol Pot Pop scene changed music forever, there was Joe Paterno & The Onlookers. Formed by Kyle Carlson and BK James sometime in 2013, the Onlookers has featured a rotating cast of guests, which has included nearly every member of the 3PP collective at some point or another.
This unreleased session from 2014 finds Kyle and BK joined by Louis Hamilton, Orie, and the ever-elusive Aaron Bruzzo, who would all go on to release solo albums on 3PP. The quintet sticks to a single, lengthy suite, though there is plenty of the loose, freeform improvisation that would soon become the backbone of the Post-Pol Pot Pop sound. Though the end results were rough, leading to the recordings being abandoned for years, the full session has finally seen the light of day, if only as a historical curiosity.
Kyle Carlson: acoustic guitar, vocals
BK James: harmonica
Louis Hamilton: keyboard
Aaron Bruzzo: acoustic guitar
Orie: vocals
